Helping Students Understand Cultural Differences

In his new picture book, “What Really Matters,” Dr. Redding’s thoughtful and engaging story of a zebra trying to figure out if he is white with black stripes or black with white stripes provides a charming and funny aide to discussion of this important subject.

A Lifetime of Experiences

What Really Matters by Ralph A. Redding, MDDr. Redding, a retired Medical Doctor, who has lived in various U.S. states, as well as Britain and Canada, has capped his career with this book, whimsically illustrated by his granddaughter, Amelia Joan Wiggins. The book was published in 2013 and has received 5-star ratings on Amazon. You can view the book on Amazon by clicking here.

In addition to a reading of his book, Dr. Redding engaged students in a discussion of cultural diversity as part of Pine Point Elementary School’s “Culture Jam.” This educational installment exposes students to different cultures through various enrichment activities, with the goal of fostering understanding as a tool to dispel fear of things that were once foreign.

Both students and Dr. Redding thoroughly enjoyed the experience. “It’s an honor and a pleasure to help open the eyes of a future generation about something that life has taught me,” said Dr. Redding. “The Pine Point students are inquisitive and eager to learn. They are the leaders and great things of tomorrow.”
