The Westerly Land Trust Community Garden Dedication & Scenic Rides

May 6, 2019

The Elms is taking part in the Westerly Land Trust’s Community Garden project. We have sponsored a beautiful Westerly-sourced carved granite bench, and soon visitors will be able to sit and enjoy the soon-to-be thriving Community Garden.

The Elms will be tending our plot at the Garden all season long. We plan on using some of the tomatoes and herbs cultivated from the Garden for our gourmet dining room and other bistro events. The Garden will also support community food programs such as the Warm Center’s Anita’s Kitchen, which is dedicated to helping those in need. Our Executive Chef Michael Lipowski and Elms kitchen staff prepare a meal weekly for Anita’s Kitchen’s guests. (Note: Anita’s Kitchen, prepared nearly 100 lunches and dinners every day, 365 days a year!)

Many thanks to our staff and local area residents for what they have done to support WLT’s vision for an expanded community garden on Main Street. Just one more reason to love Westerly!

A Beautiful Change of Pace

Most people think of beaches when they think of Westerly. However, thanks to The Westerly Land Trust (WLT), many beautiful farms, as well as other culturally significant properties, have been preserved for the benefit of the community. Founded in 1987, this private non-profit corporation actually acquired its first property in 1997. The complex transaction of 50 acres became the Avondale Farm Preserve.

The credibility of the organization was given the boost it needed to attract financial and volunteer support among individuals, the state of RI, and local foundations.

There are now 24 conservation properties and six urban properties owned and managed by the trust. Their holdings provide our community with more than just scenic beauty. The mission of the Westerly Land Trust has expanded over the years to include the revitalization of the more urban areas, which ultimately provides more resources to protect and preserve the environment as well as expanding recreational options for all local residents.

Scenic Rides

Weekly scenic rides are just part of the many daily activities that are specifically designed to promote active, healthy, and positive lifestyles.

Because being active in nature has been proven to improve mental, physical and social health, we place a priority on safe and easy access to the outdoors. Our lovely wrap-around porch, multiple patios, and professionally landscaped grounds are there for residents to enjoy, with our caring staff available to lend a helping hand when needed. And for our memory care residents we provide secure patios with supportive and friendly staff supervision.

We maintain a full calendar of activities and events, both on and off campus, as well as personalized plans to help all residents socialize in a fun and relaxing environment, regardless of mobility or memory limitations.

Getting Around Town

Transportation is another key service that helps Elms campus residents live convenient and purposeful lives.

We regularly transport to scheduled appointments individually, and take our bus on fun outings, shopping trips, and errands around town. It’s one of the reasons so many seniors choose to live worry-free at our community, and why most residents leave their car parked in our lot!
