Pet Therapy for Memory Care Produces Positive Results

Aug 9, 2018

Statistically Significant Increase in Social Interactions

For years therapeutic reaction to Pet Therapy, also known as Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT), has been very positive for seniors with Memory Care concerns.

Studies have shown that social interactions are improved and agitation decreases for many older persons with demetia or Alzheimer’s disease. In these studies supervision of interactions with patients varied, and subjects engaged in different types of contacts, including  petting and holding dogs or cats, as well as observing birds and fish.

Benefits of Pet Therapy

Positive reactions and effects in seniors interacting with animals, and after interactions, varied and included:

  • Increase in socializing and verbal interactions
  • Increased weight gain
  • Decreased agitation and verbal aggression
  • Decreased behavioral disturbance
  • Decreased loneliness and boredom
  • Decreased depressive symptoms

Horses Healing Humans

Residents and staff of The Elms enjoyed a visit from a “therapy horse.” Independent, Assisted Living and Memory Care residents were calmly greeted by a miniature horse and Horses Healing Human staff helped residents pet and snuggle with this beautiful and gentle creature.

As always, our caring and dedicated staff place the safety and security of our residents at the top of the list of considerations as we plan activities, and Pet Therapy sessions are no exception.
